5 Generative AI tools to help startups in Southeast Asia boost operations and productivity

For the past five years, Generative AI (GenAI) has increasingly emerged as a transformative technology, reshaping industries and changing the world with its prominent applications. While we can trace the foundations of GenAI back to the 1950s with the introduction of early data-generating algorithms, it has since evolved significantly.

Today, it is a powerful form of artificial intelligence capable of generating high-quality text, images, videos, audio, and synthetic data in mere seconds.

The evolution of GenAI took a significant leap forward in 2014 with the introduction of the generative adversarial network (GAN), which enabled the creation of images, videos, and audio that appeared as authentic as recordings of real people. However, the invention of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in 2022 truly captured global attention.

Sarah Taraporewalla from Thoughtworks discusses how emerging markets have both challenges and opportunities with GenAI

This breakthrough showcased GenAI’s ability to generate human-like text, demonstrating its transformative potential and sparking widespread interest among organisations and businesses. Since then, GenAI has been adopted across various sectors, revolutionising workflows and processes worldwide.

For startups in Southeast Asia, this technology has provided a much-needed boost to overcome resource limitations. For instance, in customer support, GenAI-powered chatbots provide instant assistance, reducing response times and improving customer satisfaction without requiring large teams.

GenAI has also transformed marketing strategies for startups by enabling the creation of personalised and dynamic content tailored to specific audiences. This capability enhances engagement and maximises the return on investment in advertising, a critical factor for startups operating on tight budgets.

Here are some of the best GenAI tools available or in development:

Claude.ai

Claude.ai is a generative AI chatbot and family of large language models (LLMs) developed by the research firm Anthropic. Claude excels at natural language processing (NLP) and is multimodal: it accepts text, audio and visual inputs and can answer questions, summarise documents and generate long-form text, diagrams, animations, program code and more.

Co-founded by OpenAI co-founder Dario Amodei, Anthropic has the backing of prominent tech figures, including Reid Hoffman (founder of LinkedIn) and Sam Altman (former president of Y Combinator). Claude is still under development and not yet publicly available, but Anthropic hopes to address some of the shortcomings of other LLMs, such as hallucinations (generating incorrect or nonsensical outputs).

Descript

Established in 2019 by Andrew Gould, Zachariah Cummings, and Abe Stein, Descript is an AI-powered video and audio editing platform that uses machine learning to automate time-consuming tasks like transcription, overdubbing, and removing background noise.

These capabilities allow creators to focus on storytelling and producing high-quality content faster. Descript offers a freemium model with paid plans for additional features like cloud storage and integrations with other platforms.

Mem

Mem is an AI-powered knowledge management and note-taking platform which uses natural language processing to help users organise information, surface relevant details, and collaborate on projects.

For instance, Mem can automatically create outlines and summaries of notes, suggest related information, and connect ideas across different documents. It offers a freemium model with paid plans for additional features like team collaboration tools and advanced search functionalities.

Canva

This renowned graphic design platform, Canva, was founded in 2013 by Melanie Perkins, Cliff Obrecht, and Cameron Adams. While not exclusively focused on AI, it incorporates several AI-powered features to enhance the design process, such as automatic image resizing, background removal, and smart layouts. It also offers the option of using AI tools from other companies.

With its user-friendly drag-and-drop interface and an extensive library of templates, Canva empowers users with no prior design experience to create professional-quality visuals effortlessly. The platform operates on a freemium model, offering basic features for free while providing paid plans that include advanced options such as brand kits, team collaboration tools, and access to a larger library of premium stock photos and graphics.

Murf

Murf is an AI-powered text-to-speech platform founded in 2020 by Bogdan Petrovan and Nicholas Breakspear. The platform enables users to generate realistic-sounding voiceovers from text, offering a variety of voices, accents, and emotional tones. These features make it an invaluable tool for startups needing to create professional voiceovers for explainer videos, presentations, or marketing materials.

Murf operates on a freemium model, providing free access to basic features while offering paid plans for additional capabilities, such as longer voiceovers, custom voices, and priority processing.

Generative AI empowers businesses to overcome resource constraints and compete effectively. However, successful integration requires careful consideration of the unique Southeast Asian business environment. Best practices include prioritising use cases that address specific regional challenges, such as multilingual content creation and localised customer support.

For example, collaborations like NVIDIA’s partnership with AI Singapore to develop SEA-LION, a language model trained on 11 Southeast Asian languages, highlight the potential of localised AI solutions.

Additionally, the ethical implementation of Generative AI is essential. Startups in Southeast Asia must establish comprehensive ethical guidelines that prioritise transparency, accountability, and fairness in AI systems. These include building robust mechanisms to detect and prevent misuse, such as spreading misinformation, data manipulation, or user privacy violations.
