Taking a bet on the digital economy in the game of golf

Across Southeast Asia, the golf industry has long been constrained by traditional, high-barrier country club models that cater almost exclusively to single-facility members. However, as a new generation of variety-seeking golfers emerges across markets such as Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia, the rigid economics of traditional clubs are quietly being disrupted. While legacy venues struggle to monetise excess, unutilised tee times, players are demanding greater flexibility that extends beyond simple weekend bookings to cover the broader lifestyle ecosystem, including equipment, travel, coaching, and official handicapping.

Transitioning to address this structural shift is Deemples. This platform began as a tee-time matchmaking app and has evolved into a full-stack digital membership ecosystem through Deemples Pass. Rather than competing with traditional country clubs, the platform operates as a yield-optimisation ally, filling unsold course inventory at rack rates while offering subscription-based rewards across multiple venues. Demonstrating its distribution power, Deemples recently secured a partnership with the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) to integrate the official World Handicap System (WHS) directly into the app, reaching golfers at scale in the same way major consumer delivery platforms empower established retail brands.

Here’s why East Malaysia is no longer a tech afterthought as green power and Nusantara transform Borneo

We speak with David Wong, Founder and CEO of Deemples, to explore the impact of Deemples Pass, the unit economics behind shifting from transactional booking fees to recurring memberships, and how the platform is reshaping golfer retention. In this discussion, we dive into how digital ecosystems can coexist with conservative governing bodies, the strategies driving expansion across diverse Southeast Asian markets, and why democratising access is key to unlocking the region’s broader sporting economy.

What was the catalyst for transitioning Deemples from a tee-time matchmaking app into a full-stack digital membership ecosystem with Deemples Pass?

Golf was never about just tee-time booking and matchmaking alone. To golf, you need golf equipment, golf apparel, golf accessories, golf lessons, and practice facilities. You also have travel, which includes hotels, dining, flights, and wellness to repair yourself from golf, such as massages, physiotherapy, and injury prevention. Now that you are golfing more, you are also more interested in golf media and golfing events.

Deemples initially only took care of the playing part of golf, which was finding buddies and booking tee times. Now, with Deemples Pass, we have included everything else that a golfer would need, all with just a simple upgrade from your Deemples account.

How does a low-cost digital membership reshape traditional, high-barrier country club models without alienating golf course operators?

High-barrier country club models serve the golfer audience that prefers a single-facility membership, giving them access to play without green fees at just one golf course in their city, along with all the sports facilities that come with it. This usually fits either families who do not have access to sports facilities in their neighbourhood, or golfer groups that play only at their home course on a scheduled basis, similar to a weekly badminton or tennis group.

Most of these country clubs have excess tee times that are not utilised or monetised. While priority goes to members, there is a lot of unsold inventory that Deemples helps to fill, usually close to visitor or rack rates to maximise the club’s yields.

Deemples Pass as a digital membership in no way eats into the country club model as it appeals to a vastly different golfer psychographic, specifically one that prefers convenience booking and getting rewarded to play across multiple facilities instead of one. Deemples Pass appeals more to variety seekers, whom country clubs also try to attract to fill up unutilised tee times at their golf course. This is why country clubs partner with Deemples Pass to provide these incentives to Deemples Pass members.

How did you convince a conservative governing body like the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) to integrate their official World Handicap System (WHS) into a tech app?

The MGA always had a tech partner building their own MGA app, which still exists. However, having an app without distribution does not achieve MGA’s goals in getting the WHS into the hands of more golfers.

Similar to what Jaya Grocer or Village Park Nasi Lemak does using Grab, MGA is leveraging the distribution power of Deemples to reach golfers at scale who are all already using the Deemples app.

Over the years, Deemples has also demonstrated that it was an ally to the golf industry, attempting to achieve the same objectives as the MGA by helping more golfers get into the game and golf more. This is why MGA is pouring fuel onto the fire with Deemples to achieve these goals together.

How does Deemples Pass alter your unit economics and long-term user retention compared to traditional transactional booking fees?

Deemples: Deemples Pass addresses an audience that we have never addressed before, namely the golfer who wants a membership experience without wanting to tie themselves down to just one club.

While there will still be transactional booking fees from both Deemples users and Deemples Pass members, Deemples Pass members get a lot more golfing and lifestyle benefits, which is why they subscribe for the annual membership.

Deemples Pass will definitely help with retention, but this is not a static long-term membership. Our job is to continue providing benefits, both golfing and lifestyle, that golfers value and will continue to renew.

What is your strategy for scaling Deemples Pass across diverse Southeast Asian markets with distinct golf cultures like Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia?

Deemples Pass is not a new concept. We have seen loyalty structures succeed across multiple industries, including credit cards, hotels, airlines, luxury retail, and golf.

As Deemples widens its footprint across these markets, Deemples Pass can then be deployed to provide rewards for playing more golf in those specific areas.
