We watch YouTube and Netflix way too much apparently. Data usage is growing and our growing reliance on social media and digital media is driving that growth.

Cloud-based operating system Domo recently shared the results of their Data Never Sleeps report. It analyses online consumer behavior, specifically the amount of data being generated every minute across popular apps and platforms like Google, Spotify, Facebook, Instagram, Amazon, Netflix and more.

The growth is definitely fueled by the growth in active internet users, which saw a jump from approximately 2.2 billion in 2012 to 308 billion in 2017. That’s almost 50% of the world’s population.

Social media usage continues to grow, as the numbers of posts and images being shared per minute are staggering:

  • Snapchat: 2.1 million
  • Instagram photos: 49,380
  • Tweets: 473,400
