Michelle shares her insights into the industry and how OpenMinds Digital is aiming to lead the change for businesses.
Can you describe the current digital marketing landscape in Malaysia, as to the size of the market and more?
The digital marketing landscape in Malaysia is showing tremendous potential. We’re on a trajectory where the e-commerce market is expected to soar to USD 20.93 billion by 2029 based on statistics from Mordor Intelligence, growing at an annual rate of 14.32% from 2024. Overall, the digital marketing field in Malaysia is dynamic and rapidly evolving. This growth underscores the exciting digital opportunities available, supported by governmental initiatives like digital grants and efforts to propel Malaysia into the top 20 global startup ecosystem by 2030.
Apart from that, 3 key areas stand out: firstly, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming customer-business interactions with enhanced personalisation and operational efficiency. This tech-driven approach is fine-tuning customer engagements, making them more responsive to individual preferences.
Secondly, the video game sector is transitioning beyond mere entertainment. It’s becoming a significant marketing platform with in-game advertisements and strategic partnerships, illustrating the dynamic nature of our digital landscape.
Lastly, social commerce is taking off fueled by Malaysia’s high social media engagement. Brands are tapping into these platforms to drive direct sales, reflecting how our digital marketing environment adapts to modern shopping behaviours and consumer trends.

Youโve mentioned that while many Malaysian MNCs and SMEs have adopted digital tools, they struggle with integration and optimization. What are the common challenges your clients face, and how does OpenMinds Digital help overcome them?
Many MNCs and SMEs struggle with disjointed data systems that hinder effective collaboration and cause disconnection between the brand and its audience. They often leverage a variety of disparate platforms in their work that donโt integrate well with each other leading to siloed data and workflows which prevent them from accessing essential data to draw meaningful conclusions.ย
Apart from that, they face issues like tracking end-to-end customer journeys and managing digital resources effectively, which are all crucial for predictive analysis and strategic planning. These challenges become increasingly prevalent as Malaysiaโs economies digitalise.
Our approach begins with a thorough Martech audit to identify and address the root causes of these challenges. We then streamline and integrate digital tools and assets from social media platforms to CRM systems into a unified ecosystem. If migration or development of middlemen is necessary, we provide support to ensure customers obtain data at each digital touchpoint across the customer journey.ย
This integrated solution enables companies to gain deeper insight and create a single source of truth, allowing leaders to make informed decisions. In the meantime, we implement other digital marketing efforts such as Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), Content Marketing and Performance Marketing to help businesses increase brand awareness and optimise for conversions or lead generation.
Could you share some insights on how businesses can better leverage these tools to enhance their decision-making processes?
With the right guidance and information from our analysts and strategists, companies can make informed choices that prevent wasteful spending on unsuitable channels and platforms, leading to long-term savings. This is because businesses can identify the most effective avenues for reaching their target market, thereby optimising their marketing budget and maximising returns on investment.
That being said, starting with the right martech infrastructure sets the foundation for efficient scalability and dynamic marketing strategies. A well-designed martech allows businesses to minimise redundancies, and streamline processes. This, in turn, empowers businesses to adapt quickly to changing market dynamics and consumer preferences, driving sustained growth and competitiveness.
Moreover, proper data integration plays a crucial role in enhancing decision-making. It helps businesses shorten B2B sales cycles by providing deeper insights into customer behaviours and preferences. In the B2C sector, effective data integration enables more accurate tracking of customer interactions, leading to improved ROI.
With the slow increase in female leadership within tech sectors in Southeast Asia, what initiatives is OpenMinds Digital taking to enhance gender diversity and foster a culture of inclusivity?
Thereโs a stigma that tech-related jobs are male-biased, but we believe that women are equally capable of resonating well with people and excelling in tech to support marketing expansions.
At OpenMinds Digital, our team comprises individuals of diverse genders, races, and backgrounds, all of whom bring unique perspectives and skills to the table. We believe that this diversity enriches our team dynamics and enhances our ability to innovate and problem-solve effectively. Not everyone on our team comes from a marketing background; for example, my co-founder, May Lee, with a background in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, demonstrates how diverse educational backgrounds can contribute to the martech industry.
Her persistence in conducting repeated experiments makes her exceptionally skilled at performing marketing A/B testing to develop the best marketing frameworks for our clients. I also come from an accounting and finance background and have a knack for numbers, yet I’ve also fallen in love with digital marketing and tech. We maintain that passion for data, tech, and perseverance in overcoming challenges is more important than one’s gender, race, or qualifications.
Through OpenMinds Digitial, we aspire to create a culture where individuals of all genders feel empowered to pursue careers in tech and marketing, contributing to a more diverse and inclusive industry landscape in Southeast Asia.
Looking ahead, what emerging digital marketing trends do you believe will shape the future of the industry in Malaysia and the broader region?
Looking ahead, it is evident that certain trends in digital marketing are becoming increasingly influential and will continue to shape the industry in Malaysia and the broader region. As I briefly mentioned, trends like AI, social commerce, and short-form videos are here to stay.
At OpenMinds Digital, we recognise the importance of these trends and are already integrating AI into our operations. By leveraging AI technologies, we can manage data more efficiently and create personalised content that resonates with our client’s target audiences. The rise of social commerce also presents significant opportunities for businesses to connect with consumers in new and innovative ways.
Furthermore, the growing popularity of short-form videos represents a shift in consumer behaviour that cannot be ignored. As attention spans continue to shrink, we believe brands must find creative ways to engage audiences quickly and effectively. By embracing short-form video platforms, we can capture the audience’s attention and deliver compelling messages in a concise format.
Overall, these emerging trends are reshaping the digital marketing landscape and presenting new opportunities for businesses to connect with their target audiences. By staying ahead of these trends, we can continue to drive success for our clients in Malaysia and beyond.
What’s next for OpenMinds Digital?
Looking ahead, OpenMinds Digital remains committed to its mission of guiding businesses through the complexities of the digital landscape. Our primary focus remains on assisting businesses in establishing the optimal martech infrastructure, platforms, and channels to kickstart their digital journey effectively. We understand that starting with the right setup is crucial, as it can preempt significant challenges down the line.
These challenges may manifest as inefficiencies in marketing spend due to platform mismatches, obstacles in scaling operations, or the costly endeavour of migrating to new systems after realising the inadequacies of initial setups. Addressing these pain points is essential, as they not only impose financial strains but also hinder businesses from effectively reaching and engaging their target audience.
By ensuring that our clients lay a strong foundation from the outset, we strive to mitigate these issues and position them for sustainable growth and success right from the start.
