If you’re fortunate enough to have a boat and it’s currently in a secure marina, you probably believe that you don’t have to worry about theft. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Even those boats sitting prettily in a marina lined up with all of the other watercraft have to consider theft as a possibility. Marinas are not gated lockups most of the time, which means that it’s highly possible that someone can take a chance and try to steal your boat.

The best boat engine room lights are great as a preventative measure and a way to see around your engine room, but what else could you do to ensure that thieves don’t see your boat as an easy opportunity? Boat theft is generally decreasing, but they do still happen to be able to keep your boat safe. Here are some additional tips to make sure.
- Make sure that you have an alarm system. While you’re thinking about adding extra lights to your boat so that people are deterred from coming near it. Thinking about the last two series better? You need a reliable alarm system that will last in both wet and dry environments. Ask about the alarm sensitivity as well, because the last thing that you want is to have an alarm that goes off when a seagull jumps onto your boat. An alarm system shouldn’t be too complicated to use, and it should cover the entirety of the boat, from the decks to the hatches and the engine room.
- Make sure you have secured it properly. Your boat shouldn’t be able to move easily when it’s parked up. The harder it is to move the boat, the more difficult it is to steal. Some of the ways that you can do this include parking it on the side or behind your home where you can see it, not leaving it on the street, chaining the trailer frame to a tree so that it can’t be moved easily, and making sure that you keep a wheel clamp. Book on one of the wheels. Anybody can break a chain around a tree, but they won’t be able to necessarily break a wheel clamp.
- Don’t keep anything personal on your boat. A good way to avoid theft is to make sure there’s nothing valuable on the boat. The boat itself may be valuable, and there are ways to keep that clear, but if someone’s just going on to rub the inside, make sure there is no fishing equipment, electronics, or boating equipment that is loose on there that anybody can take. Always remove the registration document, papers and the boat title as well so that they can’t be stolen.
- Pick your Marina wisely. Are you storing your boat in a Marina? Choose one with good lighting, full-time security and a gate. Make an effort to get to know the staff so that they know who you are and which boat you have. They should be familiar with your boat and when you are using it so that they can alert you if it goes missing.
