Tall mountains, pristine beaches, mouth-watering cuisine, and backpackingโ€”Southeast Asia is known for many things, but something less common the region is known for is its incredible technological achievements.

In fact, it is home to various tech platforms and inventions that have significantly advanced daily lives in the regionโ€”and beyond. In this article, weโ€™ll look at some of the biggest platforms and advancements to originate in Southeast Asia and how they have helped people.

Gojek

Founded in 2010, Gojek is one of the leading multi-service platforms in Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia. The platform has done more than provide a service; it has also contributed significantly to economic growth and job creation in the country.

Also accessible in Singapore and Thailand, Gojek provides access to delivery services, ride-hailing, and financial services. All these are offered through an easy-to-use central platform that helps local businesses reach consumers and vice versa. Because the platform is accessible in other countries, it has also allowed companies to expand across borders.

The brainchild of Nadiem Makarim, Gojek attracted almost 170 million users by 2020. A year later, it merged with another popular offering, Tokopedia, and relaunched under the name GoTo.

Grab

Like GoTo (previously Gojek), Grab began as a simple platform to aid in delivery services. Since then, it has expanded to offer ride-hailing, financial, insurance, courier, and even hotel-booking services.

Initially launched as MyTeksi, Grab was created in Malaysia by Anthony Tan and Tan Hooi Ling. The app has since expanded its reach to be used in Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, and Myanmar. A focus on local services has aided the platform in expanding to these additional countries, with continued development to provide new services.

One of the largest impacts of this technological advancement, attracting over 35 million users, is on urban mobility and the inclusion of more citizens in financial platforms. In addition, the platform has aided in job creation, with millions of delivery partners being given the opportunity to work.

Razer

Co-founded by Robert Krakoff and Min-Liang Tan, Razer has quickly become one of the most prominent names in the international gaming laptop industry. With split headquarters in America and Singapore, the company is also known for its exceptional gaming peripherals.

Shipping its unique laptops to most countries, the brand has constantly pushed the boundaries of gaming hardware and device design since it launched in 1998. This has helped it grow into a global brand competing against industry leaders like HP, Dell, and MSI.

Providing an economic boost to the USA and Singapore, the brand made heads turn with its unique designs and performance when playing everything from the latest AAA games to the slots found on casinos.com.

Sea Group

When it comes to technological advancements, Sea Group is one of the leaders in the Southeast Asia region. Founded by Forrest Li in 2009, the group is an internet conglomerate with three main divisions: Shopee, Garena, and SeaMoney.

Shopee is an extensive e-commerce platform similar to Amazon. Providing access to millions of products, the advancement of the platform has led to huge economic growth and given millions of people access to affordable and convenient consumer goods.

Like Shopee, Garena (eSports services) and SeaMoney (financial services) have grown extensively and are accessible in seven Southeast Asian countries. SeaMoney also integrates seamlessly with Shopee, further boosting the advancement of the groupโ€™s services and allowing more people to use the locally focused services.

Traveloka

While apps like Airbnb, Travelocity, and Booking.com have made huge strides in advancing technology in the tourism sector in various countries, Traveloka is a homegrown alternative for those living in Southeast Asia. As such, the app has grown extensively since launching in 2012.

The app, which helps users find, book, and pay for everything from flights to hotels, has been downloaded more than 130 million times. Of these, it attracts more than 40 million monthly users, highlighting how attractive its focus on locals is to users.

Accessible in more than five Southeast Asian countries, the Traveloka app has formed partnerships with multiple hotel groups and airlines, allowing it to offer competitive rates for tourists. In addition, it strongly favours local content and locations brought to life through exceptional mobile-first innovation.

Jobstreet by SEEK

Currently used by more than 1,256 companies, Jobstreet by SEEK has become one of the leading recruitment platforms in Southeast Asia. Founded in 1997 by Mark Chang, it has a strong influence in the region and is the go-to for many looking for a new job.

Part of the platformโ€™s success is the extensive market of employers it has acquired. These allow thousands of job seekers easy access to the newest job opportunities through the platformโ€™s easy search functions.

Over the years, Jobstreet expanded its presence across the region and currently operates in Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Singapore. It was acquired by the Australian Stock Exchange-listed SEEK Limited in 2014.

Carousell

Carousell has revolutionized the secondhand goods industry in Singapore and neighbouring countries as pioneers of the mobile-first approach to platform development. The platform, listed as a consumer-to-consumer marketplace, was launched in 2012 and has quickly grown to be one of the largest advocates of reusing and recycling unwanted items.

Providing a simple interface for users to sell unused items, the platform quickly expanded to additional countries and now also supports the sale of brand-new goodsโ€”introducing a business-to-consumer element.

The app has expanded into international regions, such as Canada, promoting engagement between buyers and sellers. It has also advanced through new technologies and features. The most notable of these are Carousell Protection and CarouPay, which allow safe payment features with buyer protection.
