Malaysiaโs secondhand motorbike market is growing, this is most likely driven by rising demand for affordable and reliable transportation. With motorcycles being a key mode of transport for millions, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas, the secondhand segment is becoming an essential part of the broader mobility ecosystem. This shift is fueled by a mix of economic factors, lifestyle trends, and an increasing preference for more cost-effective mobility solutions among Malaysians.
Motorcycles are more than just vehicles in Malaysia โ they are a lifeline for many, offering a convenient way to navigate busy city streets and a practical solution for long-distance travel. However, with new motorbike prices often beyond the reach of average consumers, the pre-owned market provides a much-needed alternative. As buyers invest in secondhand models, practical accessories like motorcycle covers become essential for protecting their purchase from weather damage and wear, especially in urban and outdoor environments. According to industry reports, the demand for secondhand motorbikes has surged in recent years, as buyers seek trusted platforms that offer transparency, quality assurance, and financing options to make ownership more accessible.

Where is Malaysiaโs VC scene headed in 2025 and beyond?
This growing interest in pre-owned motorbikes has also been spurred by urbanization and the booming gig economy. Cities like Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Johor Bahru have seen a rise in delivery services and other freelance work that rely heavily on motorcycles. As such, the secondhand market is playing a crucial role in enabling economic opportunities for many. To better understand the dynamics of the industry, we spoke to Gil Carmo, CEO and co-founder of iMotorbike. The company just closed a USD 10 million round and is expanding outside of Southeast Asia into Taiwan.
Despite its potential, the industry faces notable challenges and hurdles if it wants to continue to grow. Buyers are often wary of the quality of used motorcycles and the lack of transparency in traditional marketplaces. In response, some players in the industry are introducing solutions such as detailed inspection processes, warranties, and after-sales services, aiming to bridge the gap in trust and reliability.
As the secondhand motorbike market continues to evolve, its impact is being felt not only in Malaysia but across the Southeast Asian region, where motorcycles remain an integral part of everyday life. With innovation and customer-centric solutions driving this transformation, the market is set to become an even more dynamic and essential part of the mobility landscape.
Congrats on closing the round. How do you plan to use the fresh funds?
We are excited to have closed this funding round, and the primary focus will be to fuel our expansion into key regional markets, followed by further expansion across Southeast Asia. These regions present tremendous opportunities for growth, and weโre committed to establishing a stronger presence there.
In addition to geographic expansion, we plan to scale our operations by building more localized teams in each market to better understand and serve local customer needs. This approach will help us customize our offerings and build stronger relationships with our customers. We will also invest heavily in enhancing our logistics and infrastructure, ensuring that our platform can efficiently handle increased demand and provide a seamless experience for both buyers and sellers.
What are the reasons behind the expansion choices such as Taiwan?
Taiwan presents an exciting opportunity for iMotorbike due to its high motorcycle density, one of the highest in the world. With a population of over 25 million and approximately 15 million registered motorcycles, Taiwanโs market is ideal for our platform. The demand for affordable and reliable pre-owned motorcycles is on the rise, driven by consumers looking for cost-effective transportation solutions. This aligns perfectly with iMotorbikeโs business model of offering a transparent, trustworthy platform for buying and selling pre-owned motorcycles.
Taiwanโs motorcycle culture is deeply ingrained, and the market is mature, with consumers increasingly seeking quality assurance and reliability when purchasing second-hand vehicles. By entering this market, we aim to offer a fast, easy and hassle-free ecosystem for buyers and sellers, with value-added services such as financing, insurance, and maintenance. This will help us tap into the growing demand for pre-owned motorcycles while strengthening our presence in the region.
What about local expansion? Is it just hiring locally or are we looking at other Southeast Asian markets?
With the new funding, we are focused on expanding our presence in key areas like Johor and Penang, where there is significant potential for growth. A major part of this expansion involves hiring locally to ensure we have on-ground expertise. We are prioritizing the recruitment of talent in critical areas such as marketing, operations, logistics, and customer support. By strengthening these functions, we can better enhance user experience and engagement, ultimately delivering a more seamless and efficient service for our customers.
While local growth remains a top priority, we are also looking to expand beyond Malaysia. We are already operational in Vietnam, a market with over 70 million motorcyclesโsix to seven times the size of Malaysiaโs motorcycle market. We see immense growth potential there, and we are aiming for a more prominent position in the country.
Beyond Vietnam, we are actively exploring opportunities in other Southeast Asian countries. Each market has its own unique set of challenges and opportunities, so we are taking a measured and strategic approach to ensure we can adapt to and thrive in each new market.
There also seems to be increased competition in the market with new platforms and existing classifieds still active. How are you planning to stay ahead?
To stay ahead of the competition, we focus on providing a full, fast, easy, and hassle-free ecosystem for both buyers and sellers of pre-owned motorcycles. This ecosystem includes after-sales services such as insurance, financing options, maintenance, and extended warrantiesโcreating a comprehensive experience that goes beyond just buying and selling. At iMotorbike, we also offer flexible financing to make motorcycle ownership more accessible. To ensure peace of mind, we provide a 6-month warranty and a 6-day free return policy for our customers.
The used motorcycle market often faces skepticism, especially around transparency and quality assurance. To tackle this, weโve implemented a thorough 170-point inspection process for every motorcycle listed on our platform. Each bike is reconditioned by our professional in-house mechanics to ensure safety and quality.
Ultimately, we believe building a reputation for reliability is key to staying relevant. By focusing on customer trust, offering value-added services, and maintaining strict quality standards, we plan to continue leading the market, even as competition grows.
What’s next for iMotorbike?
Our business has been growing rapidly, and we are excited to continue expanding both locally and internationally. We are looking forward to opening new locations in Penang and Johor, which will allow us to serve even more Malaysians. Our goal is to offer a faster, easier, and hassle-free experience for those looking to buy or sell their motorcycles with iMotorbike.
Looking ahead, iMotorbikeโs next steps involve driving regional growth and innovation as we work toward building a comprehensive ecosystem for motorcycle buyers and sellers. Our goal is to set the standard for how pre-owned motorcycles are bought and sold across Southeast Asia. With the growing demand for motorcycles in this region, we are confident that our platform will continue to provide exceptional value to our customers.
We are excited to share more as the year unfolds, and we are committed to continuously improving our services to make the buying and selling process as seamless and reliable as possible.
