How next-generation connectivity is expanding access for gamers
The expansion of 4G and 5G coverage, together with the rollout of fibre-optic lines, is turning cloud gaming from a niche pastime into a mainstream service. High bandwidth and low latency enable game visuals to be streamed from remote servers in real time, delivering smooth gameplay even in titles that require high frame rates.
For a region where internet quality just ten years ago varied widely from country to country and from cities to rural areas, this leap in connectivity means a fundamental expansion of accessibility. Now, a user only needs a stable mobile connection to launch a resource-intensive title without local hardware.
Edge infrastructure and “smart” content delivery
Cloud gaming providers are actively bringing computing power closer to end users by placing edge data centres (peripheral server nodes) near major urban areas. The shorter the distance between the server and the device, the lower the latency, i.e., delay, which is critical for competitive online games.
In addition, platforms are implementing adaptive bitrate and streaming optimisation algorithms that automatically adjust image quality to the current channel bandwidth. For Southeast Asia, where network conditions can change within minutes, this approach is not a luxury but a necessity.
A smartphone instead of a gaming rig
The “play on your phone without expensive hardware” model is becoming a regional standard. High mobile internet penetration, familiarity with digital services, and a focus on urban and semi-urban audiences are creating an environment in which the phone becomes the primary gaming device.
Platforms, meanwhile, are betting on cross-device compatibility, ensuring support not only for smartphones but also for Smart TVs, PCs, consoles, and other screens. This strategy makes it possible to expand the audience and keep users within a single ecosystem.
AI is taking control of streaming
One of the defining trends has been the use of AI and machine learning to optimise streaming. The algorithms address several tasks at once:
- Video stream compression with no noticeable quality loss
- Dynamic resolution management depending on network conditions
- Network load forecasting for proactive resource reallocation
For a region where connection stability remains a challenge, such tools mean less buffering, fewer frame drops, and, ultimately, better infrastructure cost control for providers.
How companies are establishing a foothold in the region
On November 17, 2025, Tencent Cloud announced that it was strengthening its local presence in Southeast Asia, leveraging its global AI and cloud capabilities. A visible sign of the expansion was prominent branding at Singapore’s Changi Airport, one of the world’s busiest transport hubs.
On September 4, 2025, Singtel and Tencent Games launched Honor of Kings · Cloud, using 5G network slicing technology. The essence of the solution is that network slicing allocates a dedicated low-latency channel for the game, ensuring smoother and more competitive gameplay. For players, this means no large downloads and no need for a high-end device: all computing and rendering take place in the cloud. Beyond gaming, network slicing technology accelerates data processing in IoT devices and supports generative AI for smart glasses.
On November 10, 2024, GoTo Group, Tencent Cloud, and Alibaba Cloud signed agreements to develop cloud infrastructure and digital capabilities in Indonesia. These arrangements lay the foundation for scaling a wide range of services, including cloud gaming.
Indonesia leads, Vietnam is accelerating
Indonesia maintains the largest market share thanks to a massive gaming audience, mobile-first behaviour, the development of 4G/5G and fibre, affordable mobile data plans, and the widespread adoption of digital wallets that make it easier to subscribe to services. The country’s young demographic profile strengthens this potential.
Vietnam, meanwhile, is projected by analysts to post the highest CAGR over the forecast period. These two markets naturally attract the main flow of investment and partnership initiatives.
Demand and delivery models across different market segments
By device type, smartphones held the largest share in 2024. The reasons are obvious: affordability, no need for expensive hardware, and the ubiquitous availability of mobile internet. This means that optimisation for mobile networks remains a priority for the entire industry.
By solution type, the most dynamic growth in 2025–2033 is expected for file streaming (streamed file downloads). This hybrid model, in which some processing happens locally, reduces the load on the communication channel and works more reliably with an unstable connection, making it possible to expand reach beyond “premium” networks and optimise providers’ costs.
By country, the breakdown confirms the overall picture: Indonesia holds the largest share, while Vietnam shows the greatest growth potential.
Game popularity varies by country
As for the popularity of specific games, there is significant regional variation. In Pakistan and India—among the most populous markets—gambling is very popular. Interestingly, these include games with a local flavour, such as Andar Bahar. Their popularity is confirmed by the availability of apps offered by many online casinos. We confirmed this through a small study, which made it possible to find here a list of online casinos with Andar Bahar apps. The site’s authors, whom we contacted for clarification, confirmed that the apps attract the greatest interest among players from India and Pakistan.
Competition in the cloud gaming space
The market is crowded with both global and regional players. Key companies include: Microsoft, NVIDIA, IBM, Tencent Cloud, VNG Cloud (VNG Corporation), Sony, Blacknut, True Digital Group, gameQoo, AirConsole (KPIT). The main expansion strategies include partnerships and collaborations, agreements with telecom operators, new service launches, geographic expansion, and M&A deals.
On November 11, 2025, Tencent announced new strategic partnerships as part of Tencent Cloud Day Singapore 2025, reaffirming its course toward developing a joint AI ecosystem in the Asia-Pacific region. The event, under the theme “AI‑Powered Global Opportunities,” was held ahead of Singapore Fintech Festival 2025.
